Apple Chips
March 12, 2021
Who doesn’t like snacking? Snacking is my number one recommendation to prevent those growls your stomach makes as an indication to feed the worms in your body. At least, that’s what I was told growing up as a kid. “Eat up! Feed the worms inside your body.” Can you imagine how terrified I was, thinking about worms living inside me?
Okay, enough about worms, I am going to share with you the magic you can create with apples…
There is a vast variety of options available where you can incorporate apples, which offers a great and versatile addition to just about any meal. Apples can be added to salads, pies, juices, cakes, stuffings, just to name a few. But who would have thought to bake them crispy thin, making them into chips to satisfy everyday cravings of snacking? Well someone did thought about it!…and it’s the thought that counts right? Today, it counts as one of the most delicious and healthy options for snacking, in my opinion.
Just a few years ago, I decided to go apple picking which is a fun and seasonal activity and also a great way to support local farmers. Basically, you find an apple farm, pay a small price per bag (this is how it’s done on most farms), and make your way merrily amongst a vast variety of apple trees. Depending on how many bags you purchase, it is your duty to fill it up with as many apples as you can, with any variety of apples of your choosing. On that occasion, I personally thought I came home with too many apples with too little ideas of how I am going to use them. Oh boy!… I started by giving some away, then making apple salads, apple frittatas, apple juice, even tried the most obvious, apple pie, apple crisp, sliced some and froze them until I came up with other ideas….sigh, I am starting to get tired writing this. Let’s just say it was a hectic journey with apples, and the supply I had of the apples far outweighs the ideas to consume them.
Looking back at that journey, if I had known about apple chips back then, it’s a no-brainer! I would be making apple chips like crazy. It’s so convenient for everyday snacking, super easy to make, and very tasty. Did I mention healthy too! Well it depends on how you decide to make it. It only takes 2 to 3 ingredients, and that’s if you want to incorporate a little sugar in the mix or not. If you love snacking, then try this recipe. It’s also a great option for those who are on a diet.
In this recipe, I used 3 gala apples and a generous amount of cinnamon. Practically, your time spent on making these chips is minimal. Washing them, slicing them and dusting them in cinnamon would take about 10 minutes. Layer them on a baking sheet, toss them in the oven and forget about them for about an hour until it’s time to flip them. Relax and enjoy the wonderful fragrance it brings to your home. The smell is amazing! Check out the recipe below.
For those who have lots of leftover apples from the season of Apple Picking, here’s a thoughtful idea to use up those darn apples. Make Apple chips for the kids! It’s healthy and very tasty too. Besides, you know what they always say… “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away.”
